Fanime!

Posted by: Ami noMiko    in Anime, Conventions, Cosplay

Fanime!

A little late, but I caught the plague from someone at Fanime and am just now getting over it.  I gotta start working surgical masks into my costumes, somehow.

Anyway, we went to Fanime, we had a great time and we did really well in the artist alley!  I debuted some new plushie fish, including goldfish hairclips.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to take pictures before we went and we totally sold out, so… pictures to come, once I make some more.

But on to the good stuff, cosplay!  Here’s just a small sample of the great cosplays we saw.

You can see the rest at our Facebook page!  Cosplayers, if any of these pics are of you, feel free to tag yourselves!  If you don’t want your picture displayed, just let us know and we’ll remove it.

A week late and a dollar short…

Posted by: Ami noMiko    in Anime, Music Video

A week late and a dollar short...

Well, Fanime ate last week’s music video!  So, here is the video I intended to showcase last week and the last of the crossover music videos.  And this one is a freakin’ classic –  Tainted Donuts by E-ko!

Why is this video awesome?

Tainted Donuts premiered at AnimeExpo 2001, my second con ever.  Yes, read that sentence again.  2001.  This video is over a decade old, made during a time when amv makers had either two VCRs or a lot of very expensive equipment.  And yet, it still stands up well to the music videos made today.  Almost every scene has been either spliced between the two source materials (Cowboy Beebop and Trigun) or has had donuts added.  The subtitles in the beginning are a great touch!  Almost everything about this video makes the viewer think that it came from just one source.  And the pacing of the editing works wonderfully with the music in both the slower and action scenes.  Plus, the very last scene…  Unf!

What could have been done better?

I’m sure if this had been made today, some of the scene splicing could have been cleaned up a tiny bit, although the only scene that really needs it is the one at 1:37.  And perhaps the lipsyncing could have been tighter.  But really, this video is freaking amazing.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s music video!  Download it at AnimeMusicVideos.org (Members only).

And the rush to Fanime heats up!

And the rush to Fanime heats up!

So Ami and I are working hard on fun new things for our table at Fanime… and I’ve finished three new chibis for badges, stickers and magnets.

Rock Off Challenge!

This week’s video is one of my favorites!  But it’s definitely NSFW or young, impressionable minds, so I’ve placed it behind the cut.  If you don’t mind some language and imagery (and are not at work), click the link below and follow me to awesomeness…

Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked

Posted by: Ami noMiko    in Anime, Music Video

Ain't No Rest for the Wicked

This Friday, I wanted to post a video that I saw at Yaoi-con… only to discover that putting Cowboy Bebop to “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” is a somewhat popular pastime, because I went through quite a few AMVs looking for it.  But, what I found was better!  So this week’s featured music video is Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked by CMarti70546.

Why is this video awesome?

Of all the Cowboy Bebop AMVs done to this song, this one had the best scene choice, by far.  I particularly like the montage of scenes during the last repetition of the chorus.  There’s also not required to have seen Cowboy Bebop in order to follow along, here.  This one also makes an attempt to lipsync, although that’s not one of the stronger aspects of this video.

What could have been done better?

The song quality is not very good and the video quality in several scenes is pretty pixelated.  Also, although the overall scene choice was great here, some of the other videos made use of the funnier scenes that this one passed up.

I hope you enjoyed the music video!

Feel Like a Monster

Feel Like a Monster

Welcome to Friday!  This week’s music video features one of my favorite horror animes: Hellsing.  So for your viewing pleasure, here is Monsters of Hellsing by Steel.

http://youtu.be/xbCxCwvHqy0

Why is this video awesome?

In my search for horror music videos this month, I’ve come across this song A LOT.  However, this is the first video that not only followed the beat and energy of the song, but also picked scenes that matched the lyrics.  There’s a lot of really neat editing for some of these scenes, as well.  The scene at 2:13 particularly impressed me.

What could have been done better?

While the editing kept up with the pace of the song, after a while it starts to feel a little too manic.  And the flashes of white matching the beat are a bit seizure-inducing.  For my preference, the video could have done without the white flashes.

Hope you enjoyed the music video!

Sweet dreams…

Sweet dreams...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, kiddies!  No, I’m not talking about Friday (although that IS pretty wonderful).  Tomorrow is October, which is my favorite month because it houses my favorite holiday – Halloween!  So, to celebrate, I’m going to feature horror music videos all month.  And I’m taking notes from Christmas, because I’m starting early!

This week’s video is Yuuki’s Horror Lullaby by Maya.

http://youtu.be/DfrC7mGrkag

Why is this video awesome?

Song choice and the special effects of this video work wonderfully together to make it creepy as hell, morphing suddenly into straight horror when the speed of the song picks up.  A great example of how the song and the special effects truly enhance the video is at 0:32.  From the source material, this would have been a relatively boring scene – just a girl sitting there.  But the added “old movie” effects with the slow lullaby done in a minor key turn the boring image into a fantastic one.  And the shakiness of the camera throughout throws the viewer off-balance, heightening both the creepy and the straight horror parts of the video.

What could have been done better?

There’s more than half a minute of dead space after the song has ended.  Maya has commented that she’s too lazy to edit it out, which is a HUGE downside, in my opinion.  It’s your amv, you should want to present your best.  If the video itself hadn’t been so wonderful, that alone would have eliminated it from being featured here.  But, it was, so here it is.

I hope you enjoyed the music video!

Not Friday, but close enough for government work…

Posted by: Ami noMiko    in Anime, Music Video

Not Friday, but close enough for government work...

“But wait,” you say, “didn’t you miss last Friday, too?”  Possibly you said that…  Or, more probably, nobody noticed but me.  But yes, I did, all on account of Snafu Con.  As a note to myself, if you ever find yourself thinking that a con hotel has WIFI, so you can update your blog during the con, DON’T BELIEVE IT.  You will be far too busy having fun.

Anyways, I lack any good excuse for missing Friday this week.  I was simply sleeping.  😛

So, inspired by my post-con depression, today’s music video is Live by Animated.

Why is this video awesome?

Drama music videos are probably my least favorite genre, mostly because they’re probably the hardest to pull off well.  Either they’re cut without enough story telling, so that they require a knowledge of the characters in order to understand the conflict, or the scenes are so slow that they get boring.  This video suffers from neither of those problems.  The scenes chosen evince just the right amount of emotion in small, quickly placed clips that never the less tell just enough of a story in order for the viewer to get the image without necessarily having seen the origin series.  I also love that after all the pathos, the video ends on just a touch of a positive note.

What could have been done better?

I don’t have any real criticism for this video, except that I was intrigued by the scene at 4:01, but it flashed by too quickly to really get a feel for it.  I would have liked for that scene to be just a touch longer.

I hope you enjoyed the music video!  Download it at AnimeMusicVideos.Org (membership required).
